Our words are so bland in comparison to what we actually mean. Have you ever had a hard time explaining something to some, or used the phrase, “there are no words to explain how I feel” or something similar? Our soul wants for something bigger. Eurythmy can do that for you. That’s because words really are pail in comparison to what you are trying to convey. Have you ever heard, there is power in your words? There is also power in the music we listen to. It can have an effect on our moods.
Today, I am going to extend our capacities to tonal eurythmy. We also have a way of expressing the feelings of our soul through sound, we call it visible music. When we work with tonal eurythmy, we can express the things we feel but cannot describe or see. Our soul has a longing of expression that it craves to describe. Music makes us feel a certain way. It can cause our soul to rise or fall. Music can sir us to tears or make us clap in delight. Eurythmy helps us see and express the results of the rise and fall, ebb and flow of the soul.
Have you ever wondered why we say “this” is a high note or “this” is a low note? Which direction does pitch go? Up and down you might say. Are you sure? Is it literally up in the air? In the ceiling maybe? On the roof… that’s it! Or this low note… is it lying on the floor? Why then do we say this? Why do we not say, pitch travels left and right? That would make more since being as that’s the way a pianist would make notes “higher” or “lower.” He/she would move left for lower pitches and right for higher pitch. Or why not say front and back? The slide of a trombone… it travels in that way to make high and low pitches.
It is because we experience these pitches as rising and falling. Our physical body feels the higher tones, higher up in the body. And the lower tones are felt lower in our body. This is why we feel faster vibrating pitches as “high” notes and slower vibrations as “lower” notes. But we do not only feel and experience this inside our body. We can feel pitch outside of our body as well. We can experience tones way high above our heads, or low deep into the earth. Why? If high notes are felt high in the body and low notes low in the body, how can we possibly feel it outside out body? It is actually our soul, our etheric, that is rising and falling with the music. There is a loosening of our soul happening. It is no longer bound in our bodies. This is what allows us to feel the rise and fall effects on the vertical direction. And it is nearly impossible for music to not have an effect on us. We cannot simply listen, really listen to music without it affecting our soul. We will rise and fall. We can experience gravity and levity. These are the laws of the astral body, and music allows our etheric to have an astral experience! It is good eurythmic exercise to listen to music! So if our etheric is being enlightened, what do you think that does for our physical?
We begin to have feel good chemicals pumping through our body. This contributes to our overall health and longevity! Tonal eurythmy brings these feeling on even stronger, or more concentrated. It allows us to feel these experiences even stronger than just simply listening, therefore contributing to the health of our astral, etheric, and physical bodies. We have formative forces at play. We literally have the power to create. We then begin to understand the things we cant see. Not just words, but what is going on in between the words… and in tonal eurythmy, not just the notes, but what is going on in between the notes.
My exercise for this week is this: listen to music this week. But don’t just listen. I want you to slow down and pay attention to what is happening within you in between the tones of the music. There is power at work. Music makes us feel a certain way, not because of the notes, but because of what is going on in between the notes. Our soul responds in between the tones, not on the tones! So, listen to music. If you play music, even better; play a little and then pause. What does it feel like? What is your soul’s response? So slow down, really get in there and listen to that music. Where do you feel it most? Higher or lower in your body? Or is the etheric loosened to fly around a bit, high or low? Really experience this magical powers at work.
Still practice “painting” your rooms as well. Add some music to your “painting.” See what effect that has. It is quite compelling.
