Baby Steps to Incorporate Eurythmy pt. 1

Eurythmy is great and wonderful and good! It has amazing benefits not just for our physical body, but our etheric as well. We know this. We know it will be one of the most important exercises we can practice. But how in the world do we incorporate eurythmy into our day? Whether you homeschool or just understand the importance of eurythmy, let’s figure out how to do this. There is a lot that goes into a full eurythmy lesson or a full eurythmy practice. This is good to keep in mind as it gives you your end goal. But this is not the place to start. We can’t tackle a whole lesson all at once. We must take baby steps.

Let’s look at homeschooling. If you haven’t already, I strongly suggest starting with circle time. If you don’t have a circle time already, I recommend putting that together first. Once you have a circle time for your kiddos, start putting some eurythmy into that. One thing at a time. Whether it be just some gestures and stories, copper rods, or simply some form walking, pick one to start. I highly recommend starting with the copper rods. It’s easy to learn and fun! You can purchase a copper rod at any of the various Waldorf supply stores online, but they can be expensive. Check out my post here: https://resoluterhythm.com/2020/09/12/how-to-make-copper-rods/  on how to make your own at home. You can make multiples of them for a fraction of the cost. Once you have your rods made, you can check out the section of my website dedicated to copper rods! https://resoluterhythm.com/rods/  Now that you have circle time and rods, put some rod exercises and games in your circle time. It is a great form of movement and coordination! The rods help us stand upright and balance properly. It’s also a great way to start the day!

Now, if you are someone trying to build a personal eurythmy practice to do every day, you will do the same. You will not have a circle time for yourself, but you may have some morning stretches that you do, morning meditations, or daily affirmations. Simply pick one eurythmy activity to do along with your routine. You can pick from any of the rod activities to do, making a conscious effort to focus on your connection with the rod. Or you can pick a few letter gestures to focus on for that day or for a week at a time. Focus on how each letter makes you feel. Or, you could practice form walking. Walk while reciting affirmations, or a beautiful verse. Walk with the rhythm of your words. That can be a beautiful start to a daily practice!

So pick one of these items to do for the time being. Again, baby steps! No need to overwhelm yourself and try to do it all at once. That will only bring discouragement, and you will quit before you’ve even started. Do it for a few months before adding another. Evaluate how you feel about it and make sure you are where you want to be before moving on.

Congratulations! You have now begun your journey into the world of eurythmy. I’m so proud of you! What a beautiful start?!
